MLB roundup: Teixeria returns for Yankees

Mark Teixeira returned to the Yankees' lineup on Monday against the Red Sox.

Manager Joe Girardi had Teixeira batting fifth and playing first base.

Teixeira has been out for more than three weeks with a strained left calf.

"It's the first time we'll have our whole lineup for a long time, which is really good," Girardi said Sunday.

Teixeira suffered the calf strain in late August and aggravated the injury playing in a Sept. 8 game against the Orioles in Baltimore.

-- Tests on Toronto left-hander Ricky Romero's left knee revealed inflammation where the quadriceps muscle connects to the kneecap. However, there was no structural damage.

Blue Jays manager John Farrell said Romero is unlikely to need any long-term rehab.

-- The Yankees expect to be without Jayson Nix for about two weeks after he was diagnosed with a Grade 1 strain of his left hip flexor.

---The Baltimore Orioles got a scare on Sunday when their team's charter was forced to make an emergency landing in Jacksonville, Fla., Sunday night because of smoke on the plane.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known. The plane was evaluated in Jacksonville, but the team plane was able to take off again and head to St. Petersburg, Fla.

---Giants pitcher Tim Lincecum has been told he will be part of the team's starting rotation for the playoffs, despite his 10-15 record and 5.18 ERA.

All five starters will be on the postseason roster, but it's unclear whether Barry Zito or Ryan Vogelsong will be dropped from the postseason rotation.

Matt Cain is scheduled to pitch the first game of the playoffs for the Giants, and Madison Bumgarner will also be in the rotation.
