MLB Roundup: Rangers' Pierzynski comes off DL
Catcher A.J. Pierzynski will return from his second career stint on the disabled list Tuesday, the Texas Rangers announced.
Pierzynski was activated after missing time with an oblique strain. He returned to the team after a two-game rehab assignment at Double-A Frisco.
Pierzynski, batting .263 with four home runs and 11 RBI this season, was the designated hitter in his first rehab game and caught Monday's game.
---San Francisco Giants pitchers Ryan Vogelsong and Santiago Casilla were placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with pitcher Sandy Rosario and first baseman Brett Pill replacing them.
Vogelsong suffered two breaks in his right hand and dislocated the knuckle below his right pinkie during a fifth inning at-bat in Monday's 8-0 win over the Washington Nationals. He's expected to have surgery and miss about six weeks.
Chad Gaudin is the most likely replacement for the rotation.
---Cincinnati Reds Aroldis Chapman better lay off the pastries, according to a broadcaster who claims they may have been the cause of the closer's second blown save of the season.
Philadelphia Phillies broadcaster Rickie Ricardo told Sports Radio 94 WIP in Philadelphia on Monday that he brought 100 Cuban pastries to Chapman this weekend and was told Sunday morning by Chapman that he has eaten about 18 of them.
Chapman gave up back-to-back home runs to Erik Kratz and Freddy Galvis as the Phillies staged a come-from-behind, 3-2 win. The hard-throwing Chapman had never allowed back-to-back home runs in his career.
---The Baltimore Orioles activated starter Miguel Gonzalez from the 15-day disabled list Tuesday to start against the New York Yankees.
Gonzalez, who turns 29 next week, missed the past two-plus weeks with a blister on his right thumb. The righty is 2-2 with a 4.58 ERA in six starts this season. He won nine games for the Orioles in 2012.
To make room, the Orioles sent righty Jair Jurrjens to Triple-A Norfolk.
---The Philadelphia Phillies recalled right-handed pitcher Tyler Cloyd from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to start Tuesday against the Miami Marlins.
Cloyd, 25, allowed two runs on four hits in seven innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks on May 10. This is his second start of the season.
---Kansas City Royals catcher Salvador Perez is day-to-day after being diagnosed with a deep right hip bruise.
Perez was hurt Monday when he crashed into a railing near the Houston Astros' dugout in pursuit of a foul ball.
---The New York Yankees sent infielder Alberto Gonzalez to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after he went unclaimed through waivers.
Gonzalez was designated for assignment over the weekend after the Yankees landed Reid Brignac. Gonzalez, 30, batted .250 this season in 32 at-bats for the Chicago Cubs and Yankees.
---The Los Angeles Angels sent outfielder Scott Cousins to Triple-A Salt Lake.
Cousins, 28, cleared waivers after being designated for assignment over the weekend. He appeared in seven games this season for the Angels, and went hitless in four at-bats.
---The Oakland Athletics sent first baseman Daric Barton to Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday.
Barton, 27, cleared waivers after being designated for assignment over the weekend. He batted .143 (3-for-21) in eight games with the A's this season.
---Milwaukee Brewers minor-league pitcher Alan Williams received a 50-game suspension without pay on Tuesday after a second positive drug test, the commissioner's office announced.
Williams, a left-hander on the double-A Huntsville (Ala.) roster, was suspended for a drug of abuse in violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. The suspension begins immediately. Williams is 0-2 with a 3.00 ERA in three starts and 10 relief appearances for Huntsville.
---The Cleveland Indians recalled infielder Cord Phelps from Triple-A Columbus and placed Nick Swisher on the paternity list before Tuesday night's game against the Detroit Tigers, the team announced.
Swisher's wife, JoAnna, gave birth to the couple's first child on Tuesday. Switcher will remaiin on the paternity list for one to three days.
