MLB Roundup: Rangers let Ramirez go

The SportsXchange

Manny Ramirez was released from his Triple-A contract with the Texas Rangers to pursue other opportunities.

"Based on our evaluation there was not a spot for Manny on the club at this time," general manager Jon Daniels said. "We released him so he could pursue other opportunities."

Ramirez, 41, hit three home runs in 30 games with Round Rock, compiling a .259 average and 13 RBIs.

The Rangers also announced that left-hander Matt Harrison will not return this season while he continues to recover from two back surgeries earlier this year.

Harrison, the team's Opening Day starter, made only two starts covering 10 2/3 innings, the last coming on April 6, before he experienced back issues. He had the first of his two surgeries for a herniated disk in late April. The 27-year-old went to the minors leagues on a rehab assignment in late July but felt pain in his left elbow and numbness in his hand last week at Triple-A and the team made a decision to shut him down for the year.

---The Atlanta Braves placed second baseman Dan Uggla on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday and reported that he could be out up to a month after undergoing vision correction surgery.

Uggla was diagnosed in the spring with astigmatism and tried contact lenses during the season before he decided to have the surgery. The 33-year-old is batting .186 with 21 home runs and 53 RBIs in 112 games this year.

To take his place on the roster, the Braves recalled infielder Tyler Pastornicky from Triple-A Gwinnett, where he was batting .272 in 74 games.

---The Milwaukee Brewers activated veteran third baseman Amaris Ramirez from the disabled list on Tuesday.

Ramirez had been on the disabled list since July 6 because of a knee problem that limited him to 54 games going into Tuesday night's action. The 36-year-old is batting .271 this season with five home runs and 26 RBI.
