MLB roundup: Padres' Headley may miss opener

San Diego Padres third baseman Chase Headley might be in jeopardy of missing Opening Day and beyond with a thumb injury.

Headley was flown to San Diego, and the team is concerned his injury could be serious. Results of the test were not yet available, so there is no definite prognosis.

He was hurt on slide trying to break up a double play.

The All-Star third baseman was hitting .448 this spring.

---Cleveland Indians pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka has accepted an assignment to Triple-A, reported Monday.

Matsuzaka will receive a $100,000 bonus for accepting the assignment, and he can opt out of his contract if he's not in the majors by June 1. Matsuzaka, 32, was 1-7 with a 8.28 ERA for the Boston Red Sox last season.

---The Los Angeles Dodgers scratched Monday's scheduled starting pitcher Josh Beckett because of the flu, and Tuesday's scheduled starter Chad Billingsley was also scratched with a bruised right index finger.

However, Zack Greinke is scheduled to pitch on Wednesday after being bothered by a sore elbow for more than a week.. According to, Greinke will pitch in either the Dodgers exhibition game against Kansas City or in a Minor League game or in a simulated game.

---Bobby Crosby, the 2004 American League rookie of the year, saw his comeback bid come to an end on Monday when the Milwaukee Brewers released him.

Crosby, 33, hasn't played in the majors since 2010, but he was hoping to return after signing a minor-league deal with the Brewers in January.
