MLB roundup: Orioles likely to put Davis on DL

The SportsXchange

BALTIMORE -- Baltimore Orioles first baseman Chris Davis was hoping to bounce back quickly from a strained left oblique muscle, but he appears to be headed for the 15-day disabled list.

Davis suffered the injury on a swing during the fourth inning of Friday night's game against the Kansas City Royals. He expressed confidence before Saturday night's game that he could avoid a trip to the DL, but an MRI indicated that rest could be in order.

"It looks like we're probably going to have to DL him tomorrow," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. "It looks like that's going to probably happen."

Nick Markakis, usually an outfielder, started at first base in place of Davis and delivered the winning hit in the 10th inning of the Orioles' 3-2 victory over the Royals on Saturday night.

Davis is batting .250 with two home runs and 13 RBIs this season. He led the major leagues with 53 homers and 138 RBIs last year.

---Pittsburgh Pirates left-hander Francisco Liriano left Saturday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals in the third inning with dizziness and flu-like symptoms.

Liriano exited after walking Cardinals infielder Matt Carpenter. Manager Clint Hurdle and the team trainer visited the mound before removing him. Liriano was relieved by Stolmy Pimentel.

The left-hander has 3.97 ERA in 34 innings this season.

---The Pirates placed catcher Russell Martin on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a strained left hamstring.

Martin was injured during Friday night's 1-0 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. Martin, 31, is batting .242 through 16 games this season.

The club recalled right-handed pitcher Jared Hughes from Triple-A Indianapolis to take Martin's spot on the 25-man roster. Chris Stewart will likely start in place of Martin while he is out. The Pirates previously recalled catcher Tony Sanchez from Indianapolis when closer Jason Grilli went on the DL with an oblique strain.

---Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper was out of Saturday's lineup against the San Diego Padres with a jammed thumb.

Harper hurt the thumb while sliding into third base during Friday night's game. X-rays taken afterward turned out negative. A hand specialist was scheduled to examine the injury.

Kevin Frandsen started in place of Harper in left field.

---The Cincinnati Reds placed catcher Devin Mesoraco on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a strained left hamstring.

Mesoraco was injured during Friday's game against the Atlanta Braves.

The club recalled catcher Tucker Barnhart from Triple-A Louisville to take Mesoraco's spot on the 25-man roster. Brayan Pena will start in place of Mesoraco while he is out.

---The New York Yankees made a series of pitching moves on Saturday.

The club signed right-handed pitcher Chris Leroux to a major league contract and placed him on the 25-man roster from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The Yankees also optioned right-hander Shane Greene to Triple A and unconditionally released left-hander Nik Turley.

Right-hander Jose Campos, who began the season at Triple A with elbow inflammation, underwent Tommy John surgery on Friday.
