The Washington Nationals will hire Matt Williams as their new manager, CBSSports.com reported Friday. It is not known when the team will make a formal announcement. Williams, 47, replaces Davey Johnson, who retired at the end of the regular season. It is Williams' first managerial job at any level. He joined the Arizona Diamondbacks' coaching staff in 2010 as a first base coach but was most recently the third base coach. Bench coach Randy Knorr will reportedly stay on in the same capacity under Williams. Williams and Knorr were the top candidates for the managerial job. Williams and general manager Mike Rizzo worked together a decade ago when Rizzo was the Diamondbacks' scouting director and Williams played third base. ---The Chicago Cubs plan to interview former Cleveland Indians and Seattle Mariners manager Eric Wedge next week for their vacant managerial job, MLB.com reported. The Cubs have already interviewed Dave Martinez, Rick Renteria, A.J. Hinch and Manny Acta. ---St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said that Lance Lynn will be the Cardinals' starting pitcher for Sunday's Game 4 of the World Series against Boston. Matheny's decision was not surprising, although there had been some consideration of bringing Adam Wainwright back on short rest to pitch Game 4. Instead, Wainwright will pitch Game 5, followed by Michael Wacha in Game 6. ---Oakland A's minor league hitting coordinator Todd Steverson will be named the Chicago White Sox new hitting coach, MLB.com reported. He will replace Jeff Manto, who was fired.
