MLB roundup: Leyland will remain on job in Detroit

Jim Leyland will return for an eighth season as the Detroit Tigers' manager, the team announced Tuesday.

Leyland's coaching staff has also has been invited to return.

In addition, the Tigers exercised the options on shortstop Jhonny Peralta and reliever Octavio Dotel, two players who helped the team win the American League championship.

Peralta, 31, batted .239 with 13 homers and a .689 on-base-plus-slugging percentage in 150 games. He will earn $6 million next season.

Dotel, 38, posted a 3.57 ERA in 58 innings. He will earn $3.5 million in 2013.

The 2013 season will be Leyland's 22nd as a major league manager. His career began in 1986 with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He won the World Series in 1997 while helming the Florida Marlins, and he also managed the Colorado Rockies for a season.

Leyland, 67, leads active managers with 1,676 wins. He has lost World Series twice with the Tigers, in 2006 to the St. Louis Cardinals and this year to the San Francisco Giants.

--The Chicago White Sox and right-hander Jake Peavy agreed to a two-year, $29 million deal. The team also announced it picked up the contract option of right-hander Gavin Floyd, and that it declined contract options on right-hander Brett Myers and third baseman Kevin Youkilis.

Peavy, 31, finished 11-12 with a 3.37 ERA in 32 starts this year.

Floyd, 29, will make $9.5 million in 2013. He went 12-11 with a 4.29 ERA in 29 starts this year.

Myers, 32, receives a $3 million buyout rather than a $10 million salary for 2013. He began the year as the Houston Astros' closer, and he saved 19 games in 21 opportunities. Myers finished the season as a middle reliever in Chicago. Overall, he went 3-8 with a 3.31 ERA in 70 appearances this year.

Youkilis, 33, gets a $1 million buyout instead of a $13 million salary for next year. In the midst of a disappointing season, he was acquired from the Boston Red Sox in June. Youkilis hit a combined .235 with a .336 on-base percentage, 19 homers and 60 RBI in 122 games in 2012.

--The Atlanta Braves exercised the 2013 options for pitcher Tim Hudson and catcher Brian McCann.

Hudson, 37, made 28 starts in 2012, and went 16-7 with a 3.62 ERA. He will earn $9 million 2013.

McCann will earn $12 million next season. The lefty batter hit .230 with 20 homers and 67 RBI in 121 games this year, and recently had shoulder surgery.

--Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Ricky Romero had arthroscopic surgery on his left elbow.

The lefty went 9-14 last season for the Blue Jays, while posting a 5.77 in 181 innings.

The 27-year-old will need six weeks of recovery time. He also received platelet-rich plasma injections in both knees to help his recovery from quad tendinitis.

--The Tampa Bay Rays will pick up the $10.25 million option on pitcher James Shields, according to a Tampa Bay Times report.

The Rays haven't made an official announcement but have told Shields' agent, the paper reported.

The righty posted a 3.52 ERA in 30 starts this season.

--The final numbers confirmed what Fox feared.

Early returns indicated the San Francisco Giants' four-game sweep of the Detroit Tigers could bring in the lowest World Series ratings on record, and Nielsen confirmed the average of 12.7 million viewers was the smallest ever.

That is down 23 percent from 2011, and below the previous record-low of the 2008 World Series between the Philadelphia Phillies and Tampa Bay Rays (13.6 million viewers on average).

Last year's World Series won by the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games over the Texas Rangers averaged 16.6 million viewers.

Fox signed an eight-year deal earlier this month to extend its MLB television rights.
