MLB roundup: Jeter on DL; A-Rod likely back Monday

The SportsXchange

New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a grade 1 quadriceps strain, but the Yankees confirmed that third baseman Alex Rodriguez will return to the team on Monday if there are no setbacks.

The Jeter move is retroactive to July 12. The Yankees called up utility player Brent Lillibridge from Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to take Jeter's spot on the roster. Lillibridge was recently acquired from the Chicago Cubs, where he went 1-for-24 earlier this year.

Jeter, 39, started the season on the DL after having ankle surgery. He came back for one game last week before straining his quadriceps. A grade 1 strain is the least severe.

Rodriguez's 20-day minor league rehab assignment is scheduled to end on Monday. He said earlier this week he hopes to return to the big league team by Monday.

"If he's ready to come back, and he's healthy, he'll be back Monday night," team president Randy Levine told USA Today.

Rodriguez, 37, is rehabbing with Class AAA Scranton-Wilkes-Barre. He is scheduled to play Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

--- Boston Red Sox reliever Andrew Bailey was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a shoulder injury, and he is deciding whether to undergo season-ending surgery to correct it, multiple media outlets reported Friday.

Dr. David Altchek confirmed that there is damage to Bailey's labrum and capsule, Red Sox manager John Farrell told reporters, ESPNBoston.com reported.

Bailey is 3-1 with a 3.77 ERA and eight saves in 30 appearances this season.

The Red Sox signed former major leaguers Jose Contreras and Brandon Lyon to minor-league contracts and assigned them to Triple-A Pawtucket. Both are relief pitchers.

---St. Louis Cardinals veteran right-hander Chris Carpenter will make a rehab start Saturday for Class AAA Memphis, the club announced.

Carpenter, 38, pitched 2 2/3 innings Monday for Class AA Springfield. He allowed six hits and two earned runs with five strikeouts and two walks.

He has missed all this season after having right shoulder surgery in the offseason.

---Chicago Cubs right-handed starter Matt Garza told ESPN Chicago that the club informed his agent that he will be traded.

The Texas Rangers, Los Angeles Dodgers, Cleveland Indians and Toronto Blue Jays have reportedly been asked to put in final bids for Garza. The non-waiver trade deadline is July 31.

---Cubs first-round draft pick Kris Bryant won the Golden Spikes Award, USA Baseball announced.

The award is given each year to the top amateur baseball player in the country. Bryant played for the University of San Diego last season.

---The agent for Cuban defector Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez told ESPN Deportes that the right-handed pitcher expects to sign with a major league team next week.

The Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers, Miami Marlins, Minnesota Twins, New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies, Texas Rangers and Toronto Blue Jays are among the teams reportedly interested in Gonzalez.

However, the Marlins and Twins are not among the favorites to sign him because of his expected high salary demands.
