Free-agent Dan Haren
has signed a one-year, $13-million deal with the Washington Nationals, according to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal.
This deal is pending a physical.
The righty became a free agent when the Los Angeles Angels declined a $15.5-million option. Days earlier, a trade that would've sent him to the Chicago Cubs fell through when the Cubs were concerned about his medical reports.
Haren, 32, posted the worst full-season ERA of his career in 2012, at 4.33. The Nationals won't lose a draft pick to sign Haren, since the Angels didn't make a qualifying offer.
---Closer Brad Lidge
, who recorded a perfect season for the 2008 World Series Champion Philadelphia Phillies, is retiring, according to multiple reports.
Lidge told his agents, Rex Gary and Jim Turner that he wants to spend more time with his family after he missed a significant part of last season rehabbing from an injury.
Lidge, 35, leaves with 225 career saves, 37th on baseball's all-time list. He went 26-32 with a 3.54 ERA and 11.9 strikeouts per nine innings in 603 career appearances.
After a poor season in 2009, Lidge had elbow surgery in January, 2010. He joined the Washington Nationals in 2012, but missed six weeks with an abdominal injury, leading to his release in June.
---The New York Yankees won't be in dire straits should Alex Rodriguez
miss 2013, or be forced to retire because of a hip injury, according to an ESPN report.
The team is insured for a sizable amount of the $114 million owed to Rodriguez over the next five seasons, and could recover from 75 percent to 100 percent of the money, a baseball source with knowledge of the contract told ESPN.com.
Rodriguez would have to miss at least one full season before the Yankees could collect on the policy. ESPN.com said it was unclear whether the contract is insured for its entire length, or whether it included any exclusion regarding certain injuries.
---First baseman/outfielder Eric Hinske signed a one-year contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The 35-year-old batted .197 in 147 plate appearances with the Atlanta Braves last season.
