Outfielder Matt Kemp has not played for the Los Angeles Dodgers since July 21 and it does not look like the club will activate him for a while.
He has not had a physical setback as he recovers from an ankle injury, but Kemp has struggled in his rehab assignment.
"He doesn't feel good yet at the plate," manager Don Mattingly told the Los Angeles Times on Sunday, "He's not pushing us to say, 'I want to be there tomorrow.' "
Kemp, playing for Class-A Rancho Cucamonga, is 0-for-11 with five strikeouts. He has hit the ball out of the infield only once in three games.
Rancho Cucamonga is in position to make the playoffs -- their season ends on Monday -- and Mattingly said Kemp might remain with the Quakes or go to the Arizona Instructional League.
When Kemp is activated, there will be a logjam in the Dodgers' outfield with Yasiel Puig, Carl Crawford and Andre Ethier filling in while Kemp has been injured.
Kemp, the NL MVP runner-up in 2011, is batting .263 in 62 games for the Dodgers this season, with five home runs.
The Dodgers also acquired veteran infielder Michael Young from the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday night. In exchange for Young, the Dodgers sent minor league pitcher Rob Rasmussen to the Phillies.
Young, 36, will likely come off the bench to play first and third base. In 463 at-bats this year, Young is batting .272 with eight home runs and 41 RBIs.
---The Boston Red Sox designated right-handed pitcher Daniel Bard for assignment, ESPNBoston.com reported.
The Red Sox also added newly acquired infielder John McDonald and outfielder Quintin Berry to the roster and placed right-hander Alex Wilson on the 60-day disabled list.
Bard, 28, has struggled with his confidence and injuries in the past couple seasons after showing much promise earlier in his career. Bard set club records for holds in 2010 and '11 with 32 and 34, respectively. His 79 holds from 2009-11 were the most ever by a major leaguer in his first 192 appearances.
---The Atlanta Braves promoted veteran right-handed pitcher Freddy Garcia.
Manager Fredi Gonzalez said Garcia will be used mainly out of the bullpen, although he could make a spot start down the stretch.
Atlanta acquired Garcia via a waiver trade with the Baltimore Orioles on Aug. 23. In 11 games with Baltimore, he compiled a 3-5 mark with 5.77 ERA.
---The Cleveland Indians sent minor league pitcher Matt Langwell to the Arizona Diamondbacks to complete the Jason Kubel trade.
The Indians acquired Kubel from the Diamondbacks on Friday for a player to be named later, and added Kubel to the 25-man roster Saturday.
Langwell was pitching for Triple-A Columbus.
