MLB Roundup: Dodgers likely want Mattingly back as skipper

The SportsXchange

The Los Angeles Dodgers want Don Mattingly back as manager next year, according to a report.

Mattingly has not signed a contract for 2014, leading to speculation that the Dodgers might consider going in another direction. The team holds an option for 2014 at a reported $1.4 million.

Dodgers managing partner Mark Walter told CBSSports.com that Mattingly's status will be addressed after the season, but there appears to be support for his return. Team president Stan Kasten and general manager Ned Colletti ultimately will make the decision.

Earlier in the season, Mattingly's job was in jeopardy when the Dodgers were in last place in the National League West and 9 1/2 games out in June. But the team made a dramatic turnaround and ran away with the division title despite dealing with numerous injuries to key players throughout the season and playoffs.

Mattingly, who is completing his second season as Dodgers manager, also seems to have the support of his players.

---Cincinnati Reds right-hander Mat Latos underwent surgery last week to remove bone chips from his right elbow, according to MLB.com.

Dallas Latos shared the news, tweeting a picture of her husband wearing a brace. He immediately began physical therapy and is expected to be recovered in time for the start of spring training in 2014.

The Cincinnati ace complained of soreness in the elbow during the final week of the regular season, prompting then-manager Dusty Baker to start Johnny Cueto instead of Latos in the Reds' 6-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates in the National League wild-card playoff game.

The 25-year-old Latos finished the season with a 14-7 record and a 3.16 ERA with 187 strikeouts in 210 2/3 innings.
