MLB Roundup: Darvish affected by nerve problem

Texas Rangers ace Yu Darvish had an injection in his lower back on Wednesday to treat a nerve issue, according to ESPNDallas.com.

Darvish will be re-evaluated in November after he returns from Japan. He is expected to be ready by spring training.

Darvish went 13-9 with a 2.83 ERA and led the major leagues with 277 strikeouts this season.

---The New York Yankees met with Joe Girardi's agent on Wednesday and offered Girardi a significant raise to return as manager, according to CBSSports.com.

Girardi's agent, Steve Mandell, reportedly gave the Yankees some parameters for his return, and the two sides agreed to meet again Thursday. The Yankees are paying Girardi $3 million per season. His contract expires at the end of the month.

If Girardi does not manage next season, he is considering working as a TV analyst for a year. The Chicago Cubs are also interested in Girardi.

---The Kansas City Royals added Dale Sveum to their coaching staff, the club announced Thursday.

Sveum, who was fired as the Chicago Cubs manager on Monday, will handle infield instruction and other coaching duties for the Royals.

The club also announced that it did not renew the contracts of third base coach Eddie Rodriguez and bench coach Chino Cadahia. Cadahia was on personal leave to attend to a family matter late in the season. He is expected to be offered another job in the organization.

---San Diego Padres right-handed pitcher Tyson Ross had arthroscopic surgery on his non-throwing shoulder, the club announced Thursday.

Ross is expected to be ready by spring training.

The 26-year-old went 3-8 with a 3.17 ERA this year. He started 16 of the 35 games he pitched.

---Four of Pete Rose's gambling checks will be auctioned off beginning Saturday.

Bids will be accepted on goldinauctions.com starting at $2,500.

Each of the checks are made out to "cash," with values of $500, $8,000, $8,000 and $10,000. Several pages from the Dowd Report, which led to Rose being banned from baseball for life, are also included among the items in the auction. The pages of the report being auctioned mention the specific checks included in the bidding.
