MLB Roundup: Cubs designate LaHair, White Sox sign Wise to one-year deal

The SportsXchange

The Chicago Cubs have designated first baseman Bryan LaHair for assignment, the team announced.

LaHair, an All-Star last season, is expected to sign with Fukuoka of the Japanese League. In turn, the Cubs are expected to get $950,000, ESPN reported.

In his first major-league season at age 30, LaHair batted .286 with 14 home runs and 30 RBI before the All-Star break but slumped in the second half of the season and lost the first-base job to Anthony Rizzo.

---Outfielder DeWayne Wise has agreed to terms on a one-year, $700,000 contract with the Chicago White Sox.

Wise returned to the White Sox in August after his release by the New York Yankees. Between the two teams, Wise posted a .259 batting average and career bests with eight home runs 30 RBI and 19 stolen bases in 101 games this past season.

The 34-year-old Wise spent the 2008 and 2009 seasons with the White Sox. A .228 career hitter, Wise also has played for Toronto, Atlanta, Cincinnati and Florida.
