The St. Louis Cardinals will place left-hander Jaime Garcia on the 15-day disabled list with left shoulder pain. Garcia will see a doctor to try to find out exactly what is wrong and how long he will be out, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The Cardinals recalled reliever Mitchell Boggs from Class AAA Memphis to take Garcia's roster spot.

Garcia, 26, had shoulder problems last year. This year, he is 5-2 with a 3.58 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 43 strikeouts in 55 1/3 innings. He has struggled, however, in his last two starts, allowing 11 earned runs in 11 1/3 innings.

Starter Jake Westbrook is also on the disabled list, so the Cardinals placed John Gast into the rotation.

---The New York Yankees acquired infielder Reid Brignac from the Colorado Rockies for cash, according to CBS Sports. The Rockies designated Brignac for assignment on Thursday. They received $75,000 from the Yankees in exchange.

Brignac, 27, can play second base, third base and shortstop. He batted .250 with one home run and six RBI in 53 plate appearances for Colorado. He previously spent five years with the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Yankees designated infielder Alberto Gonzalez for assignment to make room for Brignac. Gonzalez is a combined 8-for-32 this season with the Chicago Cubs and Yankees.

---The Los Angeles Angels claimed third baseman Chris Nelson off waivers.

Nelson was designated for assignment by the New York Yankees earlier in the week. He started the season with the Colorado Rockies but lost his job to Nolan Arenado. He batted .242 in 71 plate appearances and was traded to the Yankees. Nelson went 8-for-36 in 10 games with the Yankees.

The Angels made room for Nelson by designating outfielder Scott Cousins for assignment. Cousins played in seven games with the Angels but has spent most the season in the minors.
