MLB roundup: Brewers' Gamel out for the season

Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Mat Gamel will miss the entire season after recently reinjuring his surgically-repaired right knee during batting practice.

Manager Ron Roenicke told reporters about Gamel's status on Monday.

Gamel was filling in for regular first baseman Corey Hart, who is recovering from knee surgery.

The Brewers will have to look elsewhere for a first baseman while Hart is out. He is expected to miss at least the first month of the season.

Gamel played in just 21 games before he tore his ACL in 2012. Over a five-year career, Gamel has batted .229 with six home runs in 106 games.

General manager Sandy Alderson told reporters Monday that the team denied Santana permission to pitch in the tournament because he finished last season on the disabled list.

Santana would have pitched for Venezuela. He pitched off a mound Sunday for the first time since the team shut him down in August because of back and ankle issues.

---Texas Rangers infielder Jurickson Profar, considered by Baseball America as the game's top prospect, will not play for his native Curacao in the World Baseball Classic.

---Former Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton told the CBS radio affiliate in Dallas-Fort Worth on Sunday that the area is not a true baseball town.

Hamilton, who signed a five-year, $125-million contract with the Los Angeles Angels, heard boos from the Rangers crowd as the team collapsed the final week of the 2012 season.

"There are true baseball fans in Texas, but it's not a true baseball town," Hamilton said. He added that Dallas has "always been a football town."

---The Pittsburgh Pirates extended manager Clint Hurdle's contract through 2014 with a 2015 option, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported.

The Pirates finished 79-83 last year, which is their best record since 1997. Hurdle is 151-173 in two seasons with Pittsburgh.

The eight-time All-Star retired after last season, and Monday he dispelled rumors that he is considering a comeback.
