MLB Roundup: Blue Jays sign veteran slugger Guerrero

The SportsXchange

Vladimir Guerrero may have found a return trip to the major leagues through a familiar country.

The Toronto Blue Jays have signed the designated hitter to a minor-league contract, according to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal.

The 37-year-old would earn a pro-rated portion of $1.3 million in the majors.

Guerrero, who began his career in 1996 with the Montreal Expos and has 2,590 career hits, could serve as a pinch-hitter and designated hitter.

Guerrero also has 449 homers and is a career .318 hitter in 16 big-league seasons. In 590 plate appearances with the Baltimore Orioles last year, he batted .290 with 13 homers, but couldn't land a job in the offseason.

--New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner's return from an elbow injury has been slowed, according to CBS Sports.

Gardner was supposed to rejoin the team Thursday, but his return date is now not known.

Gardner hurt the elbow when making a diving catch in mid-April. He's currently experiencing soreness and swelling around the elbow, according to radio station WFAN in New York. He will have an MRI on Thursday.

"We miss his presence in left field," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "But we've got to find a way to get it done without him."

The speedy outfielder was hitting .321 with a .424 on-base percentage this season. Raul Ibanez has replaced him in left field for New York.

---The Colorado Rockies outrighted Eliezer Alfonzo to Triple-A Colorado Springs on Thursday. The catcher had been designated for assignment earlier this week and passed through waivers. He's currently serving a 100-game suspension for a second positive test for performance-enhancing drugs.
