MLB: Rolen expected to retire

Cincinnati Reds third baseman Scott Rolen may have played his final Major League game, according to a report in USA Today.

An official announcement isn't expected until later in the offseason.

Rolen struck out to end the Reds' season in the NL Division Series on Thursday, then was asked about his intentions for next season. He offered only that he was "going to go home and be a dad."

The 37-year-old batted .281 with 316 home runs and eight Gold Gloves during a 17-year career that began in 1996 with the Philadelphia Phillies.

---New York Yankees third baseman will watch the decisive Game 5 from the bench, as the struggling superstar is being replaced in the lineup.

Manager Joe Girardi has opted to start lefty Eric Chavez against right-hander Jason Hammel.

Rodriguez is 2-for-16 with nine strikeouts in the series, and has been pinch hit for twice in the past two games.

Raul Ibanez, the hero of Game 3, will serve as the DH.
