MLB: Red Sox recall Mortensen, Padilla on DL
The Red Sox recalled right-handed pitcher Clayton Mortensen from Triple-A Pawtucket and placed reliever Vicente Padilla on the 15-day disabled list with bicep soreness.
Mortensen has a 1.17 ERA in 23 innings with the Red Sox and has 17 strikeouts.
The Red Sox have placed 24 players on the disabled list this season.
--The Giants and outfielder Melky Cabrera are putting off contract talks until the offseason, CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman reported.
Cabrera was the All-Star game MVP in the midst of his career year with a .353 average, 11 home runs and 56 RBIs.
He was leading the National League with a 152 hits at the end of play Tuesday.
Cabrera can be an unrestricted free agent for the first time at the end of the season. Cabrera, who turns 28 on Saturday, was acquired from the Royals in an offseason trade for left-handed pitcher Jonathan Sanchez. He came up with the Yankees in 2005, was traded to the Braves and then went to the Royals and hit .305 with 18 home runs and 87 RBIs, career highs across the board.
The durable outfielder is also a plus defender with a tremendous throwing arm.
--The Texas Rangers placed catcher Yorvit Torrealba on waivers so he can be given his unconditional release, ESPN Dallas reported Wednesday.
Torrealba was designated for assignment after the Rangers traded for catcher Geovany Soto from the Chicago Cubs before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. Torrealba will become a free agent if he is not claimed by another team by 1 p.m. ET on Friday.
Torrealba hit .236 with three home runs and 12 RBI in 45 games with Texas.
--Cleveland Indians designated hitter Travis Hafner was scheduled to have an MRI on his back Wednesday after missing his third straight game, MLB.com reported.
Hafner also missed more than a month of this season after having knee surgery. He is batting .239 with 11 home runs and 32 RBI in 60 games. He will be a free agent at the end of the year.
