Through games of Oct. 2, the five American League playoff teams were set, but seedings were still up in the air aside from the Central Division champion Detroit Tigers being locked into the No. 3 seed. The New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles were still jockeying for the East Division crown, with the other set to be a wild card. In the West Division, the Texas Rangers and Oakland Athletics were still in contention for the title, with the other team to go to the wild-card game.
