Update: Carp is likely headed to the disabled list with a hip injury suffered Sunday, the Seattle Times reports.
Recommendation: Carp has been on the DL twice this season. Justin Smoak could be recalled from Triple-A to take over first base. The Mariners could shift Dustin Ackley to first and then find someone to play second base. Since coming off his last DL stint in late July, Carp has hit .276 with one home run, three doubles and a .728 OPS in 17 games as the full-time first basebman. That's better than Carp did as the first baseman, but it's still short of ideal for a corner infielder.
