Miguel Cotto Might Just Give Sergio Martinez His Wish: Fan Reaction

Yahoo Contributor Network

Miguel Cotto (37-3-0, 30 knockouts) will get some stiff competition when he challenges Austin Trout (25-0-0, 14 knockouts) for the WBA world light middleweight title on Dec. 1, but the Puerto Rican remains confident that he'll emerge victorious.

With a win against Trout, Cotto hopes he'll be able to secure a few big fights in 2013, and he's even open to the idea of a bout against WBC middleweight champion, Sergio Martinez (50-2-2, 28 knockouts).

"For me the most important thing was to end the year with the hope of getting a new title and that's what I aspire to do," Cotto said. "I have a huge motivation to get back in the ring to prove that I can go back to being a champion for the fifth time in my career. … Sergio Martinez is one of several possibilities before us. After Trout, we can discuss which [opportunity] is the most appropriate. If it's Sergio Martinez, I will surely have no problem facing him."

Martinez put on a boxing clinic during his last outing against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 knockouts), handing the then undefeated Mexican his first professional loss. Sergio's performance was almost flawless, but he struggled during the final round, narrowly escaping with the win after getting sent to the canvas.

Still, Martinez' performance against Chavez Jr. made it clear that the Argentine is the best middleweight in boxing right now, and Cotto will be in for another serious test if the two end up fighting in 2013.

Miguel showed a lot of heart by accepting to fight a risky opponent like Trout, so I won't completely rule out the possibility of a Cotto-Martinez matchup. However, Cotto is also interested in a fight against Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, and that seems like the more logical option for "Junito."

Skill wise, Canelo and Cotto are evenly matched, and they're both bigger draws than Martinez.
