Miami Marlins Pitcher Jose Fernandez Dies In Boating Accident

He was 24.

Jose Fernandez, a 24-year-old pitcher for the Miami Marlins was killed in a boating accident in Miami Sunday (Sept. 25) morning. Fernandez and two friends died in what officials say was a speed-related incident.

Fernandez died from blunt force and was found in the water. The identities of his friends remain sealed until family members have been notified.

The Coast Guard found the victims at 3 a.m., according to ESPN. None of the victims were wearing life jackets.

“They found a boat that was up against the jetties,” Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Chief Todd Garofalo said told WSVN-TV. “They did do an initial search and they found three victims — two on top of the water, one underneath the boat and they had unfortunately passed away.”

Fernandez — who celebrated his birthday in July — was a native of Cuba, and a first round pick in 2011. The team was scheduled to play the Atalanta Braves tonight, but the game has been postponed until Monday (Sept. 26).
