COMMENTARY | The Miami Marlins' inauspicious start to the season has not been helped by the rash of injuries they have dealt with before and during the campaign thus far.
The following is updated as of May 21.
Henderson Alvarez, starting pitcher, 60-day disabled list
Alvarez was transferred to the 60-day DL on May 7 with right shoulder inflammation. His return is to be determined. The earliest he could come off the DL is around the All-Star break.
Jose Ceda, relief pitcher, 60-day disabled list
Ceda was placed on the 60-day DL the day before the season began March 31. He is still recovering from Tommy John surgery that he underwent in April 2012. The timetable for his return is unknown.
Matt Diaz, left field, 15-day disabled list
Diaz was placed on the 15-day DL on May 20 retroactive to May 19 due to a left knee bone contusion. His time of return is unknown.
Nathan Eovaldi, starting pitcher, 60-day disabled list
Eovaldi was placed on the DL on March 24 due to right shoulder inflammation. He threw 30-40 pitches in a bullpen session May 16 and was slated for a 45-pitch simulated game May 20. It's possible he will return as early as mid-June.
Casey Kotchman, first base, 60-day disabled list
Kotchman has been on the DL since April 4 with a strained left hamstring. He is expected to begin a Class A rehab assignment the week of May 20, but his major-league return is unknown.
Joe Mahoney, first base, 15-day disabled list
Mahoney was placed on the DL on April 28 with a strained right hamstring. He's been sent on a Class A Advanced rehab assignment as of May 21 and could possibly return in May.
Logan Morrison, left field, 60-day disabled list
Morrison has been on the DL since spring training while recovering from his September 2012 right knee surgery. He has been sent on a Class A Advanced rehab assignment as of May 20 and could return as early as May 30.
Alfredo Silverio, left field, 60-day disabled list
Silverio was placed on the DL on March 31 to recover from his May 2012 Tommy John surgery. His return is unknown.
Donovan Solano, second base, 15-day disabled list
Solano was placed on the DL on May 6 with tightness on his left side. He was throwing but not swinging the bat as of May 18. His return is to be determined.
Giancarlo Stanton, right field, 15-day disabled list
Stanton was placed on the DL on April 30 after straining his right hamstring. He was hitting, throwing and jogging on an anti-gravity treadmill as of May 19. He might return in May.
Chris Valaika, third base, 15-day disabled list
Valaika was placed on the DL on May 8 with a left wrist fracture. He underwent successful wrist surgery May 10, but his return is to be determined.
