One thing that I am well aware of as a Miami Hurricanes fan is the fact that they are in the process of rebuilding their football program. However, one thing is essential to their rebuilding success and that is recruiting. While the Hurricanes had a great recruiting class in 2012, ranking eighth overall according to ESPN, they are now lagging in their 2013 effort and find themselves a distant seventeenth in the national rankings with only 11 official commits thus far.
The biggest potential problem that I see is the looming NCAA sanctions that are coming, which stem from past trouble with the Canes football program. While no one really knows exactly how hard the NCAA will come down on the program, everyone knows that sanctions are coming. This is likely a problematic obstacle that head coach Al Golden and the rest of the Hurricanes coaching staff are dealing with in regards to recruiting. Many younger players may not wish to attend a program that is restricted in any way and will therefore opt to go elsewhere.
Possible Lackluster Season
Though the Hurricanes started off a surprising 4-1 and were 3-0 in the ACC they have since all but fallen apart. This has been frustrating to watch as a fan, but likely even more frustrating for the coaches who have to recruit for the Canes. Now at 4-4 and 3-2 in the ACC the Canes are facing the possibility of yet another lackluster year, which will not help in the race to sign recruits. Though they do still have a chance to win the ACC title, they will need to play perfectly in order to do so.
Young Team Now
Yet another factor that I think might be hurting the Canes' recruiting efforts is the fact that the Hurricanes are such a young team already. Looking at their depth chart, there are many sophomores and even freshman residing there. That means that a player just coming in would have to be extra special in order to make an immediate impact and start right away. In this case, a player might wish to go to another program where they have a better chance of starting right away.
Long Road Ahead
Though I am not sure the Hurricanes will have the kind of success this season that I want to see as a fan, I am sure that coach Golden and the rest of the staff will continue to work hard on recruiting for the long road ahead. While they're certainly lagging as of now, I am still hopeful that they can turn things around and still turn in a decent recruiting effort for 2013 despite all the obstacles they face.
