As a lifelong fan of the Miami Dolphins, there is one thing that I have been waiting a long time for: a great quarterback. While I long for the days of Dan Marino, I am becoming a lot more accustomed to the days of Ryan Tannehill. While I wasn't in the camp that thought he should start in his rookie season, I am being proven wrong by Tannehill as he has already shown a lot of promise in the 2012 season. Now, I am actually excited about the quarterback position again and I think that Tannehill will only get better from here.
Passing the Trial by Fire
If there's one way to tell how good a player will be in the NFL, it's with a trial by fire. In other words, just throw the person in and see how they do. However, this can backfire in a big way as confidence means a lot, especially at the quarterback position. Should a quarterback get thrown into the mix before they are ready then the end result could be a total loss of confidence and a quarterback who ends up holding a clipboard for most of his NFL career.
However, this has not been the case with Ryan Tannehill. Looking at his stats, it seems that he gets better with each game. In fact, he has gone from throwing no touchdowns and three interceptions in his first game to throwing two touchdowns and no interceptions in his most recent game. His completion percentage is near 60% for the season and he really looks to be coming into his own. In my opinion, he is passing the trial by fire.
Build Around Him
I'm not just a fan of the Miami Dolphins, I am a realistic fan. With that being said, I feel that what Ryan Tannehill has been able to do thus far is extremely impressive considering the Fins have no marquee players at the wide receiver position. That's tough for me to say as Davone Bess happens to be my favorite player. The point is, I really think that if the Dolphins acquire a star wide receiver in the future Tannehill will only continue to blossom. So, the Dolphins can build around Tannehill and enhance his future production with the team.
More to Come
I'm under no grand illusion that Ryan Tannehill is the best quarterback in the NFL, but I do think his promise speaks for itself. If he continues to improve in the same way he has thus far in 2012 then I see no reason at all that he can't be among the best in the league and certainly prove to be more than worthy of the number eight overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. At the very least, he's given Dolfans a quarterback to believe in once again.
