Miami Dolphins continuing to monitor Arian Foster

The running back dram of this entire offseason has continued into at least this week with the news that the Miami Dolphins are continuing to monitor the status of veteran running back Arian Foster. Foster — a star during his early years with the Houston Texans — is still recovering from injuries sustained last season.

However, when healthy, Foster has been one of the top running backs in the entire NFL. Again though, that being healthy part, it has not happened often over the course of the last couple of seasons. Just in the last three seasons, Foster has missed 23 games due to injury, including the 12 he missed last year with a ruptured Achilles.

With Jay Ajayi receiving high praise from new head coach Adam Gase, it looks almost like a certainty that the second year pro will be the starting running back this season for the Miami Dolphins. Adding to that will be rookie Kenyan Drake, a player who will be looking to lock in that second string role on offense.

At the tail end of the running back line, the Dolphins do have the multidimensional Damien Williams. Playing all over the field on offense and on special teams, Williams should be in line to earn the third string running back spot entering the season.

That likely will leave the Miami Dolphins with a conundrum of a decision. With an already — or what looks to be set lineup — in the backfield, do the Dolphins need to continue to pursue Arian Foster? In my opinion, yes.

While all three of the probable week one running backs are all very talented, none of them have any experience taking a starting role in the NFL. While Foster has had injury problems, he will bring a veteran presence to the Miami Dolphins backfield, something it has not had for since Reggie Bush departed the team.

With Arian Foster at least taking a partial starting role in the Miami backfield, some of the weight of being a first time NFL starter could be lifted off the shoulders of Jay Ajayi. Allowing him to adapt to the role before allowing him take over as the full time starter next season once he has gained more experience.
