Meyer takes scholarships away from two players

The SportsXchange

Ohio State coach Urban Meyer removed the athletic scholarships of tight end Jake Stoneburner and offensive tackle, reported Saturday.

The players, who are seniors, were disciplined after they settled court cases from a June 2 incident.

Both players were charged with obstructing official business after police in Delaware, Ohio, said they urinated on a building and fled when confronted by officers. They pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of disorderly conduct Friday.

Both players, however, will have opportunities to work their way back on scholarship and return to the team after the summer.

"We are disappointed with the decisions made recently by two of our football players," Meyer said in a statement. "Jake Stoneburner and Jack Mewhort will each be removed from athletic scholarship beginning with the summer term, and they will continue to be suspended from team activities until stipulations are successfully met."

Stoneburner and Mewhort, who are projected starters this season, are enrolled in summer classes but have to pay their own tuition during the term. They are allowed to work out at the team's facility during the summer but not with their teammates.
