It took 120 minutes, but Mexico eventually overwhelmed the USA to win the CONCACAF U-20 title 3-1.
Two early goals set the tone for what looked like it would be a high-scoring match, but after Jesus Corona's opener five minutes in and Benji Joya leveler from the spot five minutes later, the goals dried up.
Both sides had chances in normal time to grab the win, with the USA denied one clear penalty and Corona being a constant threat against the USA defense, but the score would hold through 90 minutes.
In the extra period Mexico found the breakthrough.
Julio Gomez scored a cracker of a goal in the 100th minute, acrobatically volleying home a corner to put El Tri in front.
Jorge Espericueta made it 3-1 from the spot in the 113th minute after Corona did expertly to turn a USA defender who was left with no choice but to drag the forward down.
