A struggling Mexico side faces a youthful Peru team Wednesday night in San Francisco and the word from El Tri camp is that players must use the game to make the most of their opportunities, even if World Cup qualification points aren’t at stake.
“There are players that are being given their first opportunity and we have to take advantage to improve the way the team functions,” explained goalkeeper Jesus Corona, who himself will be hoping to put in a good performance to wrestle the No. 1 shirt back from Guillermo Ochoa.
Gerardo Flores and Luis Montes have been called into the squad for the first time, while Efrain Velarde, Jesus Molina, Omar Bravo, Rafael Marquez Lugo, Israel Jimenez and Javier Cortes are far from certain inclusions when the full squad is available.
All will be hoping to prove to Jose Manuel “Chepo” de la Torre that they belong at international level and the coach himself has been public in urging them to make a difference.
“If they have been called up is it because we’ve seen qualities in them to be here,” said Chepo. “But they can’t wait for a second opportunity, they ought to take the first because they don’t know if they’ll get another.”
