Layun dislocated his right shoulder near the end of America’s 3-1 loss to Pumas on Saturday, and will recover with Las Aguilas. Multiple reports coming out late on Monday suggest he won’t have to undergo surgery on the injury, and will only be out between three weeks and a month.
Former Atlanta defender Layun turned up with the rest of the 16 domestic-based players in Mexico City to begin preparation for the Nigeria game under coach Miguel Herrera, who told reporters that no player would be brought in to replace Layun.
There were no other injuries reported and the squad will continue to train on Tuesday and Wednesday before players head back to their domestic teams for Liga MX games this weekend.
“We have to try to make the most of the time we have to take onboard the coach’s orders and adapt to the Europe-based people,” captain Rafa Marquez said on Monday.
The eight Europe-based players will arrive in Mexico after their games this weekend, before the squad heads north to Georgia for the only FIFA date ahead of Herrera announcing his World Cup squad.
