Mexico fires soccer coach

The SportsXchange

The Mexican Football Federation announced Saturday that national soccer team coach Jose Manuel "Chepo" de la Torre was fired.

Assistant coach Luis Fernando Tena will take over on an interim basis as Mexico heads into its World Cup qualifier against the United States on Tuesday in Columbus, Ohio.

De La Torre's ouster came after Mexico's shocking 2-1 loss Friday to Honduras at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. It was Mexico's first loss at home since 2001, and ended a 27-game unbeaten streak in World Cup qualifiers.

Mexico is in fourth place in the six-team tournament used to determine World Cup qualifiers in the CONCACAF region. The top three finishers in the group automatically qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The fourth-place team plays Oceania champion New Zealand in a home-and-home playoff for the final spot.
