Mexico in ascent, say El Tri players

Mexico started its Gold Cup campaign with a confidence-sapping 2-1 defeat to Panama, but the two wins since seem to have restored some belief in the El Tri camp.

“You work differently when you win,” Marquez Lugo is quoted as saying in Central Deportiva after training on Wednesday. “We’d have liked to have qualified in first place in the group; it wasn’t to be due to the very poor game against Panama, but this team is on the rise.”

Marquez Lugo’s Chivas teammate Marco Fabian has been one of the highlights for El Tri so far, netting a goal in each of the team’s three games, and is also confident that Mexico is headed upward.

“The team has improved. There’s now a good atmosphere,” Fabian told the same outlet, before implying that there is more to come: “We have to correct some errors that we have committed so that the team gives a much better performance.”

Fabian also said that this Mexico squad has the capability to win the Gold Cup and become champion for the third consecutive time.

“We have to show what Mexico has in previous tournaments and this one shouldn’t be an exception,” said Fabian. “We have the quality to win this tournament.”

Mexico plays its quarterfinal against Trinidad and Tobago on Saturday in Atlanta, with CONCACAF announcing the game will kick off at 6:30 p.m. ET.
