Mexico’s Aquino looking for more improvement

Mexican winger Javier Aquino has enjoyed a positive first season in La Liga with Villarreal, but is hoping he can carry on getting better.

“I’m in a good moment and I’m playing well, but I think I can improve,” said Aquino on Wednesday in widely published quotes. “Making the most of opportunities and continuing to help the team are my objectives.”

The 23-year-old is intent on playing his part in Villarreal securing European soccer next season, just under a year since he debuted for The Yellow Submarines in Spain’s second division.

Aquino admits that leaving Cruz Azul and going to Spain to play second division soccer was a risk, but one which he had analyzed in detail and was sure would pay off.

“It was a risky gamble because the team was in the second division, but it was Villarreal,” said Aquino, referring to the team’s history. “I spoke to those around me and to people who knew European football well and I didn’t doubt coming here.”

Villarreal is currently fifth in La Liga and Aquino has featured in all 20 of the club’s games this season under coach Marcelino Garcia.

While he may have been overshadowed by fellow Mexican Giovani Dos Santos, Aquino has impressed and was named by Spanish publication Marca as one of the top 11 newcomers to La Liga earlier this month.
