Mets option Matsuzaka to minors

The SportsXchange

The New York Mets optioned veteran right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka to Triple-A Las Vegas on Saturday.

Matsuzaka struck out eight batters and walked none in five scoreless innings Saturday but the team decided to reassign him.

ESPNNewYork.com reported that Jenrry Mejia will start the season as the Mets' No. 5 starter.

The Mets may call Matsuzaka up soon. Because he has six years of major-league experience, he can opt out of his one-year deal June 1 if he is not on the major-league roster by then.

Last year, Matsuzaka went 3-3 with a 4.42 ERA in seven starts with the Mets. Once an 18-game winner for the Boston Red Sox, Matsuzaka is 53-40 with a 4.54 ERA over his career.
