Mets lose injured starter Mejia

The New York Mets placed right-hander Jenrry Mejia on the 15-day disabled list with a bone spur in his elbow, the team announced Sunday.

The bone spur has bothered Mejia all season. He felt discomfort in the elbow during Saturday night's start against the San Diego Padres and departed in the third inning.

The 23-year-old Mejia is 1-2 with a 2.30 ERA in 27 1/3 innings spanning five starts this season. He had spent time in the minors after missing the early portion of the season with inflammation in the elbow while recovering from Tommy John surgery in 2011.

Mejia was hoping to postpone surgery to remove the spur until after the season.

Right-hander Greg Burke was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas to take Mejia's roster spot. He is 0-2 with a 4.66 ERA in 29 relief appearances for the Mets this year and 2-2 with a 4.73 ERA in 26 2/3 innings in Triple-A.
