Free agent closer Brian Wilson reportedly participated in a private workout for the New York Mets and general manager Sandy Alderson on Saturday. According to USA Today, Alderson watched Wilson's workout, which is believed to have taken place at UCLA. The former Giants closer missed most of the 2012 season after playing in only two games and undergoing Tommy John surgery. Wilson expects to be ready for opening day. Known for his eccentricities and for his beard, Wilson has spent the past seven seasons with the Giants. He is a three-time All-Star. From 2008-2011, Wilson appeared in 258 games and saved 163 games with a 3.07 ERA and 297 strikeouts. The Mets already have closer Frank Francisco under contract. In December, Francisco underwent surgery on his right elbow to remove bone spurs, but he should be ready for spring training.
