Mets earn first three-game sweep at Philadelphia in six years

PHILADELPHIA -- While the New York Mets celebrated in the other clubhouse, the Philadelphia Phillies got an earful from their manager.

A three-game sweep will do that.

Ike Davis hit a three-run homer and the Mets scored eight runs off the Phillies' bullpen in a 10-6 victory Wednesday night that completed their first three-game sweep at Philadelphia in six years.

"We absolutely got them at the right time," Mets manager Terry Collins said.

Andres Torres also hit a homer, and the Mets rallied for the third straight game to improve to 18-13.

The loss spoiled the return of Cliff Lee for the Phillies, who fell a season-worst four games under .500 at 14-18. Philadelphia rookie Freddy Galvis had three RBI and hit his first career triple.

Manuel ripped his players in a meeting after the game.

"We're not playing the way we should play," Manuel said. "We did quite a few things wrong tonight. We've given seven or eight games away already."

Lee allowed two runs and five hits, striking out six. He made his first start since a sensational performance at San Francisco on April 18, when he threw 10 scoreless innings in Philadelphia's 1-0, 11-inning loss. However, he strained his left oblique in his final inning of that game and went on the disabled list three days later.

For the third straight night, the Phillies lost a game they led after five innings. They hardly look like the team that has won five straight NL East championships.

"Charlie is an unbelievable manager, and everything he said is right," said right fielder Hunter Pence, who dropped a fly ball for an error. "It's not acceptable to play the way we're playing and the way I'm playing. We've all got to look ourselves in the mirror. We've all got to figure something out."

Trying to protect a 4-2 lead, Kyle Kendrick (0-3) imploded in the seventh. He gave up an RBI double to Justin Turner, hit Lucas Duda with a pitch with the bases loaded to force in a run and allowed a go-ahead RBI groundout to Torres that made it 5-4.

Kendrick allowed consecutive doubles to David Wright and Scott Hairston in the eighth before leaving to a chorus of boos. Jose Contreras gave up Davis' bomb.

"We were fortunate with Lee on a pitch count," Wright said. "It's nice to come from behind and steal a few games."

Tim Byrdak (2-0) retired the only batter he faced in the sixth to earn the win in relief of Dillon Gee. Gee gave up four runs and 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings.

"It's huge to come in here and get a sweep," Gee said. "And everybody is contributing. We never stop fighting."

Galvis hit an RBI double with two outs to put the Phillies up 3-2 in the sixth. Laynce Nix followed with a pinch-hit single to drive in Galvis for a 4-2 lead.

Galvis gave the Phillies a 2-1 lead in the fourth with an RBI on a groundout.

Lee, who can swing the bat pretty well for a pitcher, helped his own cause with an RBI single in the second that gave the Phillies a 1-0 lead.

The Mets tied it at 1 in the third on Daniel Murphy's two-out RBI double to left-center.

Wright's bloop single to center drove in Torres to tie it at 2 in the sixth.

NOTES: The Mets hadn't swept the Phillies in a three-game series in Philadelphia since June 13-15, 2006. ... Carlos Ruiz (hand), Nix (calf) and Ty Wigginton (side) didn't start because of various injuries, but they were available to pinch-hit. ... To make room on the roster for Lee, the Phillies optioned righty Michael Schwimer to Class AAA Lehigh Valley. ... Mets prospect Jenrry Mejia gave up two runs in five innings for Class A St. Lucie. It was his first outing since Tommy John surgery on his right elbow last May. ... Mets manager Terry Collins indicated that shortstop Ronny Cedeno may not be activated from the disabled list Friday. Cedeno has been sidelined due to a strained right quadriceps. ... Torres, Wright, Hairston, Murphy and Davis each had two hits.
