DENVER -- The New York Mets made the most of a scheduling inconvenience Thursday.

They beat the Colorado Rockies 3-2 on Marlon Byrd's two-run homer in the eighth as the teams made up a game that had been snowed out April 17.

The Mets originally were scheduled to fly home from Chicago after a two-game series with the White Sox ended Wednesday night. But instead they had to make a side trip to Denver before heading East.

Michael Cuddyer set a Rockies franchise record by extending his hitting streak to 24 games, passing Dante Bichette, now the Rockies hitting coach, who hit safely in 23 consecutive games in 1995.

Rockies starter Tyler Chatwood, who has been on his own impressive run, again pitched well, limiting the Mets to one run in six innings. But Matt Belisle, who has struggled of late, gave up a one-out single in the eighth to Daniel Murphy, whose slow ground ball carried into center field when shortstop Jonathan Herrera collided with second baseman Josh Rutledge.

Byrd followed with his 12th homer, marking the fifth time in seven games Belisle has been scored upon. During that stretch, he has yielded 12 runs in 6 2/3 innings. Byrd's homer on Belisle's seventh pitch, a 2-2 fastball, made a winner out of LaTroy Hawkins, who pitched the seventh after starter Jeremy Hefner held the Rockies to two runs, one unearned, in six innings.

Hefner finished June 1-1 record with a 1.80 ERA in five starts.

Both runs off Hefner came in the second. That rally began when Cuddyer led off with a single to left-center. He went to third on Wilin Rosario's double. Todd Helton hit a sacrifice fly, and the Rockies added an unearned when Rosario moved to third on Nolan Arenado's grounder to third and scored when first baseman Zach Lutz threw wide of third, trying to get Rosario.

Cuddyer led off the ninth with a single to right but was thrown out by Byrd trying to stretch the hit into a double. Cuddyer, who also had an infield single in the sixth, went 3-for-5 to raise his average to .349 overall and .386 (39-for-101) during his hitting streak.

The Rockies had a chance to tie the game in the eighth when pinch hitter DJ LeMahieu led off with a single. He broke for second but was picked off by reliever Scott Rice and caught stealing for the first time in 10 attempts this season. With two out, Rutledge singled and moved up on a wild pitch, but Rice struck out Carlos Gonzalez.

Chatwood held the Mets hitless until Lutz singled in the fifth, following a leadoff walk. Juan Lagares' bunt single loaded the bases.

Third baseman Arenado fielded Anthony Recker's grounder and got a force out at home, but Recker beat catcher Rosario's throw to first.

The Mets scored on a fielder's choice when Hefner hit a grounder in the hole that Herrera fielded, but Hefner narrowly beat second baseman Rutledge's throw to first in an attempt to omplete a double play.

With one out in the sixth, Chatwood gave up consecutive singles, the second a line drive off his right leg hit by Byrd. Chatwood retired Josh Satin on a pop up but walked Lutz to load the bases before getting Lagares on a called third strike on his 103rd and final pitch.

Chatwood has not allowed a home run in 50 2/3 innings this year, including 28 2/3 at Coors Field, and pitched six innings for the sixth time in nine starts while whittling his ERA to 2.13.

The victory enabled the Mets to finish their 11-game road trip with a 7-4 record. The Rockies, who opened a seven-game homestand after a 2-7 road trip, lost for the eighth time in their past 10 games.

Notes: LHP Drew Pomeranz was scratched from a scheduled start Thursday with Triple-A Colorado Springs, paving the way for him to make his 2013 Rockies debut Sunday against San Francisco at Coors Field. He would replace RHP Juan Nicasio in the rotation. A roster move does not have to be made until Sunday. Pomeranz is 8-1 with a 4.20 ERA and 96 strikeouts and 33 walks in 85 2/3 innings. Nicasio, who was hit hard in his last start Tuesday at Boston, is 4-4 with a 5.31 ERA...Mets manager Terry Collins rested 3B David Wright, who started every game this year except April 29 at Miami when he pinch hit in the 13th inning. The team arrived here late after a Wednesday night game at Chicago with a late arrival in New York after this makeup game...SS Ruben Tejada (right quadriecps strain), who has been on the 15-day disabled list since May 30, is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment with the Rookie level Gulf Coast Mets this weekend but would not be guaranteed his job when he is ready to return to the Mets because Omar Quintanilla has played so well. "There's no reason why we're going to take this kid out of the lineup unless it's (due to) fatigue," Collins said...Rockies CF Dexter Fowler did not start for the second straight game due to soreness in his right wrist, which he aggravated taking a swing Tuesday. Manager Walt Weiss said, "He's a little better, but he's still sore enough that I'm going to keep him out." Fowler underwent an MRI on Thursday, the results of which were not revealed...Mets outfielder Eric Young Jr. faced his former team for the first time since the Rockies traded him to the Mets on June 18 for minor league pitcher Collin McHugh after designating Young for assignment six days earlier. When the Mets open an 11-game homestand Friday, Young, who grew up in Piscataway, N.J., will make his initial appearance at Citi Field. "Last year was my first time going to New York," he said. "And I just went on a DL stint right there at Citi Field. So I never actually played a game at Citi Field. It'll be my first time. It's going to be a lot of firsts for me tomorrow."...Rockies RHP Rafael Betancourt (right groin strain), who last pitched May 31, is scheduled to be activated Friday...Rockies RHP Edgmer Escalona (right elbow inflammation) will begin a rehab assignment Friday with Triple-A Colorado Springs. He has been on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to June 10...Left-handed hitting oufielder Corey Dickerson whose first two major league starts were in right field and as the designated hitter, made his first start in center field for the Rockies. They are scheduled to face left-handed starters in three of the next four games starting Friday when manager Walt Weiss said Dickerson was unlikely to be in the lineup, so he wanted to keep Dickerson from sitting too long...Rockies SS Troy Tulowitzki, who suffered a right rib fracture June 13, has been doing some light throwing but is not yet able to swing a bat. He said he still feels pain and termed it "more like a bruise."...The Rockies signed IF Reid Brignac to a minor-league contract and will send him to Triple-A Colorado Springs. He was on the Rockies' Opening Day roster and hit .250 with one homer and six RBI in 29 games before being designated for assignment May 16 and traded a day later to the New York Yankees for cash considerations...When the Mets and Rockies concluded their scheduled four-game series with a day game April 18, the temperature of 28 degrees when the game started tied the Rockies record for the coldest temperature at the start of game. Thursday, the temperature was 95 degrees when the game began.
