The All-Star match billed as 'Messi and Friends vs. The Rest of the World', originally scheduled for Wednesday in Los Angeles, has been canceled.
A little more than 24 hours before kickoff was supposed to take place, a clearly frustrated event staff sent out an email announcing that Barcelona star Lionel Messi would not participate in the soccer exhibition at the Los Angeles Coliseum.
"After hours of trying to convince Lionel Messi's management team to fulfill their contractual agreement and come to Los Angeles, it is clear they have no respect for these fans and this market. We feel that this is a blatant attempt to defraud American citizens and businesses that sponsored this event," said Todd Graham, CEO of El Padrino Spirits, Inc. in a barbed press release.
Messi's tour already played a match on June 29, in Medellin, Colombia. Messi and Friends beat the Rest of the World, 9-6. The match in Chicago on July 6 will be played as scheduled.
