Meghan and her rowing: Introduced to the sport of rowing in 2001, Musnicki has quickly earned accolades in many events. She rowed in the varsity eight boat at Ithaca College for three years, also helping them win NCAA championship titles in 2004 and 2005. After numerous years of training and a minor injury, she has had a highly acclaimed national and international rowing career.
During the 2012 World Rowing Championships her boat set a new world record time of 5:54:17, earning her team the gold medal. She also helped the US bring home gold last year. She has not only been a strong competitor in the eight boats, but also winning twice at the National Selection Regattas in the pair's competition.
Meghan's Olympic Thoughts: As a first-time Olympian, Musnicki has some large shoes to fill. She will be helping the US defend its 2008 Beijing gold medal. After hearing about the decision that she was chosen to represent the US, Meghan remarked via email , , "It is hard to put into words the feelings I am having. Overjoyed, excited, relieved, nervous, all come to mind. But I guess the feeling that stands out above and beyond all the others is HUNGRY." Besides the humor, the US will have stiff competition if they hope to grab that gold. It is clear that Musnicki and the other women know exactly who they need to focus on - themselves.
Personal: Musnicki has said that the most influential people in her life have been her parents. When her rowing career in finished, Musnicki plans to attend nursing school and become a nurse practitioner. However, Musnicki definitely lives in the moment and sums everything up in a recent Twitter post, "I want a gold medal. I want a world best time. I want to redefine the standard of women's rowing with these 8 other women." And she does it always with humor, "I am blessed to have so many people in my life 'pulling' for me, while I 'pull' for gold!"
Stated in my article, "2012 Summer Olympics Rowing Guide," the Eton Dorney Rowing Centre, located outside of Buckinghamshire, London, will be where the eight team and all other USA boats will be bidding for their first place finish in 2012. Good luck Team USA!
Ashley Hodge was a member on the University of Minnesota: Twin Cities Women's Rowing Team. After three months on the freshman team, she participated the next three years on the varsity team. For the majority of her rowing career, Ashley sat in seat seven, behind the stroke. She is anxiously awaiting the Olympics in London and hope that you find time to enjoy them as well.
