KATY, Texas (AP) -- Dontae Cannon scored 23 points, including the go-ahead basket with 24 seconds remaining, and McNeese State defeated Nicholls State 62-59 in the opening round of the Southland Conference tournament on Wednesday.
The eighth-seeded Cowboys (14-16) will play fourth-seeded Southeastern Louisiana in the second round on Thursday.
Cannon also made a pair of free throws with 4 seconds to play, and fifth seed Nicholls missed a chance to tie it at the end.
Kevin Hardy had 11 points and eight rebounds for McNeese State.
Fred Hunter led the Colonels (9-21) with 21 points and 14 rebounds. T.J. Carpenter scored 14 and Dantrell Thomas had 10 points for Nicholls.
The teams also met four days ago in Thibodaux, La., with McNeese State winning 92-89 in double overtime. Desharick Guidry, who had 34 points in that game, was held to seven on Wednesday. Hunter scored 32 on Saturday for the Colonels.
