New York Jets quaterback Mark Sanchez left Sunday's game against Arizona midway through the third quarter and his replacement, backup Greg McElroy, threw a touchdown pass in his first NFL action.
Sanchez was 10 of 21 for 97 yards and had thrown three interceptions when he exited the game. Coach Rex Ryan spoke to Sanchez as he was coming off the field after Arizona's Ronald Talley batted down a pass and McElroy began warming up.
McElroy entered to loud cheers in MetLife Stadium and led a 10-play, 54-yard touchdown drive that resulted in a 1-yard touchdown pass to tight end Jeff Cumberland that gave the Jets a 7-3 lead.
After sitting out last season with a thumb injury, McElroy received his first shot Sunday in part because backup Tim Tebow was inactive with a rib injury.
