Matt Kenseth Has a New Sponsor: NASCAR Fan Reaction

Yahoo Contributor Network

Matt Kenseth has been able to secure a new sponsorship with Fifth Third Bank. The bank plans to sponsor him for four races in the Sprint Cup Series. I think this is positive news for both Kenseth and Roush Fenway Racing.

The New Sponsorship

Although the sponsorship with Fifth Third Bank is only for four races, this is still an improvement for Matt Kenseth. The team hopes that the sponsorship will be extended in the future. However, the marketing department of Roush Fenway Racing may want to reconsider how it phrases future statements. A notice from the team scared fans because it offered a vague comment on Kenseth having a new number.

The number turned out to be a sponsor with numerals in its name, so fan concerns about the No. 17 car disappearing were put to rest. Roush Fenway Racing issued a statement that clarified the sponsorship and listed the four races that Fifth Third Bank will be supporting. The team's account manager, Jessica Smith, has also confirmed on Twitter that the "No. 17 team will have the @FifthThird paint scheme" during the races, but the car number will be preserved.

The Contract

Fans have also been concerned about Matt Kenseth's future with Roush Fenway Racing. Since his contract will be up soon, the team has the option of extending it or releasing him. However, Jack Roush has indicated that they want to keep Kenseth, so I think he will get an extension. Roush mentioned, "Matt Kenseth is a cornerstone of Roush Fenway and he'll be part of it as long as I am, as long as he wants to be. He certainly has a place here as long as I'm able to stay at the head of it."

Both Matt Kenseth and Roush Fenway Racing will probably be shifting their focus to securing sponsors for the 2013 season soon. The support from Fifth Third Bank is a good start, but a sponsor for four races is still not enough. In the past, they have pointed out that they welcome multiple deals from diverse businesses. The search has probably started for more companies.
