Matt Cain, Buster Posey, Melky Cabrera, and Pablo Sandoval Elected to 2012 All-Star Game: Fan’s Reaction

Yahoo Contributor Network

For the first time since 2001 (Barry Bonds, Jeff Kent, and Rich Aurilia), the San Francisco Giants have three position players elected as starters to the annual All-Star Game. Catcher Buster Posey, outfielder Melky Cabrera, and, in a surprise, third baseman Pablo Sandoval will all represent the Giants in the 2012 All-Star Game at Kaufman Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. Matt Cain, for now, is the only Giants pitcher named to the All-Star staff.

At last year's All-Star Game, the Giants sent five representatives but only one position player (Sandoval) following the team's 2010 World Series-winning season. Cain, a potential starter for the National League this year, will currently be alone on the pitching staff despite Ryan Vogelsong and Madison Bumgarner both putting up deserving cases for selection this season. With Wade Miley of the Arizona Diamondbacks and Huston Street of the San Diego Padres serving as the only All-Star selections for their respective teams, there were a few less NL spots for Giant pitchers this year.

Matt Cain

Owner of the first perfect game in Giants franchise history, Cain was a no-brainer to the NL All-Star team. Currently possessing a 9-3 record, 2.53 ERA, and 114 strikeouts on the season, Cain has been one of the most dominant starting pitchers in the National League alongside R.A. Dickey of the New York Mets. Depending on how situations play out, Cain may not be alone on the NL staff if Vogelsong or Bumgarner are named as replacements for pitchers who throw the Sunday before the game.

Buster Posey

After missing most of last year with his season-ending ankle injury, Posey earned his first All-Star game appearance by surpassing St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina in the fan voting. With a team-leading 10 home runs and a very good bounce back season for the Giants, Posey is a deserving player for the starting spot at this year's All-Star Game.

Melky Cabrera

With a major-league leading 109 hits, Cabrera nearly missed making the starting lineup. In the last announced round of voting, Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun passed him for the third spot in voting. However, thanks to a "Giant" push by fans, Cabrera retook his position and will now start the All-Star game at a stadium he called home just last season.

Pablo Sandoval

The most surprising of the bunch making the team, Sandoval beat out New York Mets' David Wright despite missing five weeks due to injury. Likely benefiting from the fans voting for Cabrera, Sandoval found a way to squeak past Wright and make the All-Star team for consecutive seasons.
