Masters 2017: Daniel Summerhays almost did the near impossible in Amen Corner

Famously guarded by Raes Creek in front and backed by a giant bank of azaleas, the 12th hole at Augusta National is not your normal par 3. Strong winds on the hole, a tiny green and a legacy of felling many a Masters bid — just ask Jordan Spieth — means that many golfers are just fine carding a three and heading for a better scoring opportunity on the par-5 13th.

With that in mind, it’s really no surprise that No. 12 has seen fewer aces than a cooler at a Vegas blackjack table. There have only been three hole-in-ones recorded on 12 during the Masters competition with the last coming off the club of Curtis Strange in 1988.

Daniel Summerhays, however, almost joined Strange, William Hyndman (1959) and Claude Harmon (1947) in that exclusive club on Thursday morning with a great shot.

But not quite.

Summerhays, 33, would go on to birdie the hole as well as the 14th for an early -2 start through five. And given the winds on the course on Thursday, that’s pretty impressive.

Four different holes have been aced in Masters history with No. 16 being far and away the most frequent. Eighteen golfers have recorded a hole-in-one on that hole, including three in 2016. No. 6 has been aced five times while only one golfer —Jeff Sluman in 1992 — has aced the 213-yard fourth.
