Maryland has suspended running back Wes Brown after Brown was arrested and charged with second-degree assault on a police officer, theft and wiretapping,

"We are extremely concerned that one of our student-athletes, Wes Brown, was arrested Wednesday evening," the university said in a statement. "This is a matter that we take very seriously. We have been in contact with the local authorities and will continue to cooperate throughout the entire process.

"The University of Maryland has suspended Brown, and he is not permitted to participate in any athletic-related activities. Since this is a pending investigation, we will refrain from having any further comment at this time."

According to the arrest report via the Washington Post, Brown, who had been listed as a costarter on the Terps summer depth chart, was a "person of interest in an open, nonfatal shooting" that occurred in June.

He was being questioned on campus when he swung at a Baltimore detective -- missing him -- then shoved him with two hands and fled on foot. Brown, a sophomore who had rushed for 382 yards as a freshman last season, was caught after a short chase.

He was charged with wiretapping because he allegedly had a borrowed cellphone hidden in his pocket. And because he ran with the borrowed cellphone, police charged him with theft.

Brown posted bond and released on Friday night. He has a preliminary hearing scheduled on July 31.
