Martin Kampmann (20-5-0) is currently on an impressive three-fight win streak, and he plans to add another victory to his record when he faces Johny Hendricks (13-1-0) at UFC 154. The event is set for Nov. 17, at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada.
Having trained with the "Bigg Rigg" in the past, Kampmann is very respectful of the Hendricks' skills, but he's certain his technique will guide him to victory.
"I feel confident about the fight with Johny," Kampmann said during an interview with BleacherReport.com. "We've trained together in the past. Obviously we know each other well and are aware of each other's strong points. Johny is a great wrestler, has knockout power, but he's not super technical. I have to watch out for the big left hand and his wrestling is always a factor."
Given the fact Kampmann stopped Thiago Alves and Jake Ellenberger in his last two outings, a win against Hendricks -- who defeated Jon Fitch and Josh Koscheck in his last two fights -- should put him in line for a title shot.
"For sure I believe a win over Hendricks gets me the title shot," Kampmann added. "I feel I should have been given the shot a long time ago. I have fought some of the best welterweights in the world and every single fight I get is against one of the top contenders."
Even though Kampmann has had his share of struggles in the UFC, it's pretty clear he's one of the top welterweights in the promotion right now. His takedown defense, submission, and striking skills have always been solid, but he also showed that he had the heart of a champion during his "UFC on FX 2" fight against Alves, withstanding some serious punishment before securing a guillotine choke with only 48 seconds left in the bout.
Hendricks will certainly be one of the toughest opponents Kampmann has ever faced, and I for one can't wait to see these two square up inside the Octagon.
