At OTAs on Thursday, Patriots’ fans were eager to see just how well their teams new players would perform. The New England Patriots have a whole slew of new players on their roster that have a chance to shine at the OTAs. Among them is tight end Martellus Bennett, the new tight end on the block that will be working in conjunction with Rob “Gronk” Gronkowski to help the Patriots’ running and passing game.

OTAs may be without pads, but that did not leave Martellus Bennett out of the spotlight. Martellus Bennett was an extreme challenge to cover at OTAs on Thursday, making multiple catches. Most notable of the catches was Martellus Bennett snagging the ball in the end zone as he was blanketed by safety Patrick Chung. To say that this fast start for Bennett is a good sign for the New England Patriots would be a gross understatement.

Bennett came over to the New England Patriots in free agency as a key addition to the New England offense. Hopes are that Martellus Bennett will bring a presence to the offense that hasn’t been seen on the Patriots since the days of Aaron Hernandez. Rob Gronkowski, by himself, is uncoverable and with the addition of another sure handed tight end like Martellus Bennett, the New England Patriots’ offense is going to create serious mismatches in the passing game.

Rob Gronkowski was absent at the OTAs on Thursday allowing Martellus Bennett all the more attention from the press. Bennett’s size is staggering and has created mismatches with defenses throughout his career. Being able to make clutch catches and gain yards after contact are a specialty of Bennett. To see him ‘beating’ Patrick Chung in OTAs is a very good sign. After all, Patrick Chung is hardly a safety at which to shake a stick. Expect Bennett to have continued success working in conjunction with Gronk come opening day.
