Marlins, Yankees sign first-round picks

The SportsXchange

With the deadline to sign baseball draft picks one day away, two more first-round picks became pros Thursday.

The Miami Marlins agreed to terms with University of North Carolina third baseman Colin Moran, and the New York Yankees signed Fresno State outfielder Aaron Judge, according to multiple media reports.

Moran reportedly received a $3.5 million bonus, Major League Baseball's recommended slot figure for the No. 6 overall pick, while Judge reportedly got $1.8 million, slightly higher than the recommended $1.68 million for the 32nd overall selection.

Moran, 20, batted .345 with 13 homers and a Tar Heels-record 91 RBIs this year, helping the team advance to the College World Series.

Judge, 21, hit .369 with 12 homers and a .655 slugging percentage.

The last remaining unsigned first-round pick is California high school right-hander Phil Bickford, selected by Toronto with the 10th overall pick. Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos said the team and Bickford are far apart in their negotiations, and that Bickford is expected to turn down Toronto's offer. Bickford has a scholarship to play for Cal State Fullerton.

If the Blue Jays don't sign Bickford, they'd receive a compensation pick at No. 11 overall in next year's draft.
