PHILADELPHIA -- Ed Lucas led off the top of the 10th inning with a tie-breaking homer Wednesday night, lifting the Miami Marlins
to a 4-3 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies
Lucas' homer, his fourth of the year, came on a 2-2 slider from reliever Cesar Jimenez
Brad Hand (1-1) pitched a scoreless inning to earn the victory for the Marlins, which snapped a four-game losing streak. Steve Cishek
worked out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the bottom of the 10th to earn his 31st save. Cishek has converted his last 26 save opportunities.
Miami's Mike Stanton had tied the game at 3-3 in the sixth with his 23rd home run, a two-run shot off Ethan Martin.
The Phillies had a runner at third with one out in the eighth, but reliever Chad Qualls
, an ex-Phillie, struck out Cody Asche. Marlins shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria
then robbed Roger Bernadina
of a hit by diving to his right to snag a hard-hit grounder, then throwing to first to end the inning.
Hechavarria also made a leaping grab of Asche's liner in the sixth.
Marlins starter Nathan Eovaldi worked five innings and gave up three runs (two earned) on four hits. He struck out five and walked four.
Zach Miner, making a spot start when Kyle Kendrick
was scratched with a sore shoulder, went three shutout innings, allowing two hits while striking out two and walking two.
The Marlins took a 1-0 lead on Donovan Solano's run-producing groundout in the top of the fifth.
The Phillies answered with three runs in their half of the fifth. Roger Bernadina scored on a passed ball by Miami catcher Jeff Mathis, and Chase Utley followed with a two-run single.
NOTES: Phillies interim manager Ryne Sandberg celebrated his 54th birthday. ... Kendrick told reporters the MRI he underwent on his ailing right shoulder Tuesday revealed tendinitis and fraying of the rotator cuff. Pending a visit to the New York Mets physician David Altchek, he has been cleared to play catch Friday. Kendrick hopes to make his last two starts of the season, but Sandberg would not say whether he plans to use him. ... When Utley homered and knocked in four runs Monday, then repeated the feat Tuesday, it marked the third time in his career he had at least two homers and eight RBIs over a two-game span, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
